Monocle and Monocle 24 — Journalism and Radio Production 🎙️

This is the alt text.

While doing my BA in Art and Design I did an internship at Monocle (to fuse my interests in both design and journalism) and ended up being offered a full-time position upon graduating. I became a part of team of nine that launched Monocle 24, Monocle’s new international 24-hour radio station. From the launch in October until April 2011 I worked on more than 100 live shows (totaling more than 200 hours) and over 40 feature programs. Radio was a relatively new medium to me, but it was immensely fascinating.

Radio demands a lot and there is a constant unforgiving deadline to work with, but the adrenaline rush is like no other type of journalism I’ve ever done. So different from paper, where images will guide you through the text. In radio you need to use your storytelling skills in inventive ways to aid the listener; forcing them to use their imagination and color in the blanks. The design of M24 was crucial and it was riveting being a part of such a brilliant team.

Some of the highlights from M24 include co-producing an interview with Ira Glass, the host of This American Life; interviewing artist Taryn Simon, casually lounging in the grass outside Frieze in London; working on the design show Section D (with guests such as Penny Martin, editor of The Gentlewoman, Sir Paul Smith and David Mellor) and organizing a roundtable discussion on embedded journalism following the death of renowned war reporter Marie Colvin in Syria.

I decided to pursue and MA at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts, but have continued to freelance after leaving, writing about culture, design and food.
